Robert Sunderman, the Resident Scenic Designer and Associate Professor of Scenic Design and Technical Theatre, joined the ISU faculty in the fall of 2000. He received his MFA, MA and BFA in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. Before coming to ISU, Robert was the Scenic Designer and Technical Director at Iowa Public Television. Additionally, he has designed for many regional video companies throughout the Midwest.
Robert has received four Iowa Film Awards, a National Broadcasting Designers Award, and three Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Meritorious Achievement Awards for Scenic Design. In 2003, he received a Kennedy Center faculty summer fellowship in Scenic Design from Region V of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He then attended an intensive Master Class with distinguished and nationally renowned Scenic Designer Ming Cho Lee at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
Robert is also a fine artist who has exhibited extensively throughout the United States. In the fall of 2003 he was one of 300 artists from the United States to design a Christmas tree ornament for the White House Christmas tree. He has also received many other awards for his fine art.
